HOUSTON – Uber says the driver who ran over and killed a little girl Sunday night in North Harris County, can’t drive for them while the case is being investigated.

“We have removed the driver’s access to the platform while this investigation is ongoing and are standing by to assist police however we can,” Uber told KPRC 2.

The Uber driver was dropping the one-year-old and relatives off in the parking lot of an apartment complex Sunday afternoon along Waverly Drive in Aldine.

Investigators say he had just dropped off the passengers and thought they were a safe distance away from his SUV.

“When the Uber driver saw the female adult clear at a couple of feet, he began driving forward to turn around, accidentally rolling over the child,” said Lt. K Benoit of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The family flagged down an emergency vehicle to help get the girl to the hospital where she later died.

They also beat up the driver who was in serious condition that night but expected to survive.

“Our thoughts are with the toddler’s family after this heartbreaking tragedy,” Uber said.

No one has been charged in the case.
