Beloved pediatrician’s family suing Conroe apartment complex over her murder

The wrongful death suit says the complex management company didn’t keep up with safety and security to protect Dr. Talat Khan and others who lived there.

ConroeThe family of a loving mother and devoted physician is suing the Conroe complex where she lived and died.

Dr. Khan was sitting at a picnic table at the Alys Luxury Living Apartments last October when police say Miles Fridrich, 24, stabbed her multiple times. Several neighbors rushed to help. Fridrich was ultimately caught and charged with first-degree murder.

Khan’s husband and children are now suing the complex, saying the management company didn’t do everything it could have and should have, to protect her and others. The complaint against Knightsvest Management says the company’s negligence caused her death because they:

  • Didn’t properly maintain the entrance and exit gates to the complex
  • Didn’t have adequate safety or security policies in place to protect her from a “known potential risk of harm”
  • Didn’t warn Dr. Khan or others about crimes committed at the complex
  • Didn’t hire security or adequately train anyone to protect the doctor or other tenants

The man accused of stabbing Dr. Khan multiple times ran off through an “ill-maintained and inoperable entry and gates,” according to the suit.

The family says the management company knew there were risks in and around the complex, outlined in crime stats from 2018 through the end of 2023.

Crimes inside the complex:

  • 2 dead bodies
  • 7 assaults
  • 8 burglaries

Crimes within half a mile of the complex:

  • 7 dead bodies
  • 46 assaults
  • 49 burglaries

Crime within 2-1/4 miles of the complex:

  • 8 dead bodies
  • 66 assaults
  • 60 burglaries

“Dr. Khan left behind her family and home to serve a community in need, only to be murdered in the complex she entrusted to protect her,” attorney Bilaal Bada said.

The doctor’s husband and children are asking the management company to pay for the pain and anguish she suffered, her medical and funeral expenses, all the money she would have made, and legal fees.

Attorneys for the family say apartment complexes and their management companies have a duty to make sure the premises are safe.

“The danger of ill-maintained and inoperable gates is foreseeable, yet management companies, and their employees, fail to repair or remedy the dangerous condition,” attorney Mo Aziz said.

We’ve reached out to the management company for their response to the family’s lawsuit and will add that as soon as we hear back.
