KPRC 2 Senior Scholarship: Noor Qadeer is a survivor who wants to help other children beat cancer

HOUSTON – KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with scholarships in 2024. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.

Carnegie Vanguard High School senior Noor Qadeer is the ninth $2,500 scholarship winner from the Class of 2024. Carnegie Vanguard High School is part of the Houston Independent School District.

Qadeer was diagnosed with bone cancer in her junior year of high school. Going through treatments like chemotherapy required Qadeer to be homebound or hospitalized, yet she kept up with her school work while maintaining an impressive GPA. Through her treatment, Qadeer participated in projects like Creative Writing Tuesdays, music therapy and a project where she painted ukuleles to raise money for the hospital’s art program.

Giving a nod to the doctors and nurses who helped her through her cancer journey, Qadeer says they inspired her decision to pursue a medical degree at the University of Houston. “Whether it’s assisting patients with life-altering diagnoses or researching alternative treatment methods for such ailments, I’m determined to give back to a community that has given me the ability to walk normally again.” Qadeer told KPRC 2′s Justina Latimer that she may even go on to specialize in Pediatric Oncology.

Qadeer is Vice President of her school’s Bollywood Club and also participates in Interact Club.
