Family-friendly breweries: Houston-area locations all about beer, family, fun

Need weekend plans for the family? From playgrounds to big yard games for kids, a brewery is not a place you might not expect to take your kids. Believe it or not, there are several great family-friendly breweries in the Houston area.

If you opt for checking out some of these family friendly breweries, always plan ahead and stay safe. You always want to make sure you are drinking responsibly and have one person as a designated driver.

"It's kind of like a big backyard hangout," said Jennifer Royo, co-founder of No Label Brewery. "People bring their chairs, their dogs, their children, bring snacks and just enjoy the good beer on tap."

At No Label Brewery in Katy, it's all about beer, fun and family. No Label has been a favorite for families for years, setting the trend for Houston-area breweries to be a friendly place to hang out.

"It's important to find things the whole family can enjoy," said Kelly Davis, founder of Houston Moms Blog.

KPRC Channel 2 News teamed up with Houston Moms Blog to look for the most family-friendly breweries in Houston.

What's the criteria?

"Is there a lot of open space? What do they have for things to do for kids and adults? And maybe one of the most important factors -- it has to have great beer," Davis said.

The list

Baa Baa Brewhouse - Brookshire: Both an indoor and outdoor playhouse and large running area for kids. There are plenty of board games and they often set up fun arts and crafts activities for the kids.

Bakfish Brewing Company - Pearland: Huge taproom and a great covered area outside. Bakfish often has a snowcone truck for families to enjoy. They've even hosted book parties and read-a-longs for the kids.

City Acre Brewing - north of downtown: This place really feels like you are hanging out with friends for a backyard barbecue. The food selection is amazing and there is a huge outdoor garden where the chef sources items for the meals.

Eureka Heights Brewing Company - Heights: Out of all of our picks, Eureka Heights has the smallest area for running around, but it still works. Big plus: They have changing stations in both the mom and dad restrooms.

Karbach Brewing Company - NW Houston: If you are looking for picnic tables and space for running around, Karbach is your place. The biergarten opens at 11 am – just enough time to sample some beers before nap-time. Karbach also has a restaurant if you get the munchies after sampling.

No Label Brewing Company - Katy: Huge outdoor space for running around. They just put up a new playground area and they often have sprinklers set up for the kids to cool off. Go ahead and let the kids take their bikes and scooters just for fun.

Saint Arnold - downtown Houston: Family favorite location for years in the Houston area. They have plenty of events for kids, including a build-your-own root beer float party and a Santa sighting during the holidays.

Spindletap Brewery - north of downtown: They say it's "liquid gold turned cold" in this tribute to the oil discovery in Beaumont. The place is decorated with oil derricks and they often set up games in the outdoor patio area.

8th Wonder Brewing - east of downtown: Tap room has a whole wall of empty cans. There is also tons of great sports memorabilia to check out. Thanks to Cut to Create for the awesome video clips of 8th Wonder Brewery!

Town in City Brewing - Heights: A favorite for local families, especially those with four-legged family members. Pets are allowed on the patio and they have a great selection of board games and coloring pages for the kids.

Under The Radar - Midtown: Under the Radar in Midtown has plenty of outdoor space and a cool outdoor fire pit. They love families and pets and often have fun treats for the dogs.
