Know your rights: Tenants rights workshop

MISSOURI CITY, Texas – A lot of renters in our area have questions since the flood. Can my landlord evict me? Can they make me pay rent if I have mold in my apartment?

Fort Bend County Precinct 2 Judge Joel Clouser will answer these questions in a Tenants' Rights workshop on Thursday.

Clouser sees landlords and tenants in his courtroom regularly in the eviction process. He said, especially now, it's important that renters understand their rights.

"I've had some tenants to come into my court with some defenses that they did not have a legal leg to stand on," Clouser said.

He wants to make it clear that he will not be hearing cases at the workshop. He will not give legal advice, but he will explain renter's rights as prescribed by the Texas Property Code.

The workshop, which is from 6 to 8 p.m., is free, but seating is limited. Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. Doors will close at 6:30 p.m. and no late-comers will be allowed entry.

Entry is on a first come first serve basis. The workshop will be held at the Fort Bend County East End Annex at 303 Texas Parkway #107 in Missouri City.
