HISD approves revised turnaround plan for Kashmere High School

School deemed as 'improvement required' for 8th consecutive year

HOUSTON – During a special meeting Wednesday, the Houston Independent School District Board of Education approved a revised turnaround plan for Kashmere High School after the school was deemed as "improvement required" for the eighth year in a row, the district announced Thursday.

The designation is used by the Texas Education Agency to determine if schools are meeting standards, which results in a requirement of the district to submit a plan detailing how it will improve student achievement at the school.

HISD's initial turnaround plan submission was rejected last week. It was then asked to resubmit its plan with more detailed description of budget, staffing and financial resources to implement the turnaround. The modified plan must be submitted to the TEA by Friday.

District officials said the Board of Education voted 6-0 to approve the modified turnaround plan that it will submit.

“Kashmere has made considerable progress, and we believe the plan and resources in place will help the school succeed” HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza said. “We also believe the modified plan the Board approved addresses the commissioner’s concerns and provides the greatest opportunity for Kashmere to meet state standards this year.”

District officials said during its special meeting Thursday, the Board of Education also canvassed and accepted official results of the Nov. 7 election and approved a resolution ordering a runoff election for trustee districts 1 and 3.
