HOUSTON – Few performers can say their career has spanned seven decades, but Cher certainly can. Now, the story of her incredible life is on stage in the Tony Award-winning musical The Cher Show -- now playing at Theatre Under the Stars at Hobby Center in downtown Houston.
The show is not only entertaining and uplifting -- featuring 35 hit songs and legendary Bob Mackie’s iconic, flashy costumes -- it also tells the story of Cher’s life all the way from childhood through today. During the show, Cher’s life is depicted in three different stages -- Cher as a child and teenager, Cher during The Sonny and Cher Show era, and Cher today -- the full-fledged star who has won the Oscar, Grammy, Golden Globe, and Emmy (to name a few).
Ella Perez, who plays Cher during her younger years, said she can relate to the way Cher fell in love with showbusiness as a child.
“I can remember seeing my first Broadway musical and it changed my life,” she said, describing the moment Cher decided to become a performer after seeing Cinderella at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
Despite her sparkly life on stage and on the screen, The Cher Show underscores a life filled with ups, downs and heartache just like the rest of us.
“She’s a human at the end of the day, and all three of us can identify with the things she’s been through in life,” says Morgan Scott, who is one of the actresses who plays the icon.
For Catherine Ariale, playing the role of Cher in her first national tour is something she describes as simply as, “a dream come true.”
Catch The Cher Show on stage at Theatre Under Stars at Hobby Center downtown through April 28th. Tickets start at $40.
