Beaumont middle school to reopen after carbon monoxide leak

BEAUMONT, Texas – Marshall Middle School in Beaumont will resume its regular schedule Monday after dozens of students were hospitalized last week because of a carbon monoxide leak.

The defective boiler that is believed to be the cause of the leak has been replaced by a temporary boiler located outside of the building, school officials said. The temporary boiler passed all required inspections over the weekend and the air quality was checked Sunday. The air quality will be checked again Monday before classes begin.

District maintenance personnel will be on hand all week to confirm the safe operation of the boiler and will use electronic monitors to verify air quality throughout the building.

Just after 10 a.m. Thursday, students complained of being light-headed and the school was evacuated. As many as 179 students and staff members were checked by paramedics.

Fire officials said the school did not have a carbon-monoxide detector. Schools are not required to have them.

Officials said there were no severe or life-threatening injuries.
