SUGAR LAND, Texas – A man who shot a Fort Bend County deputy in the leg Tuesday and then held two people hostage for several hours was found dead inside the home, authorities said.
Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls said the incident started about 4:20 a.m. when deputies responded to a home in the Orchard Lake Estates neighborhood off FM Road 1464, just west of Sugar Land, after a woman said she was being threatened by her husband.
Nehls said Deputy J. Bulman and his trainee were walking into the home when the woman’s husband, identified as 41-year-old Serik Olivares, began firing at them. The deputies exchanged gunfire with Olivares, and Bulman was wounded in the leg.
As other deputies arrived and went into the home, Olivares began shooting at them, as well, Nehls said. Those deputies retreated to a safe place and waited for SWAT officers to arrive.
The woman who called deputies and Olivares' father were able to escape the home shortly after the shootout, but Olivares was still inside the home with his mother and his 2-year-old son, Nehls said. About four hours after the standoff started, Olivares' mother and son walked out of the home.
Nehls said that after hours of trying to make contact with Olivares, SWAT officers deployed gas canisters into the home just before 11 a.m., but no one exited. Officers entered the home and found Olivares dead in an upstairs bedroom from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Bulman, a seven-year Sheriff's Office veteran, suffered an injury to his calf, but the injuries were not life-threatening, Nehls said.
Nehls said everyone who was inside the home escaped without injuries.
