Houston lands in 3rd on national gun-involved road rage incidents since 2014

HOUSTON – A new report shows road-rage incidents involving guns are on the rise, and Houston ranks third for cities with the most gun-related road-rage incidents since 2014.

Nearly everyone in Houston seems to have a story about road rage.

"They cut me off and I had a little tantrum," said Dominick Faletto.

Some encounters more dangerous than others.

"I was like 'why are you pulling over in my lane?' so then he decides to pull a gun out and show it at me," said Kay Simpson-Berea.

A study released Monday by The Trace, a nonprofit news organization that covers gun issues, shows more and more drivers are pulling guns on the road.

"Everybody has a gun; if you're ignorant and you have a gun, it's not a good combination," Simpson-Berea said.

The study found incidents in which someone in a car made a threat with a gun or fired a weapon at another driver or passenger have more than doubled over the last three years, increasing from 247 in 2014 to 620 in 2016.

The number of people wounded or killed in those incidents is also on the rise.

Houston comes in third on the list of cities with the most incidents of road rage involving guns since 2014.

Law enforcement urges drivers to stop and think before pulling a weapon on the road.

"That changes the dynamic; it only takes a little bit of pressure to pull the trigger to the rear. You can get mad, but don't let anger drive you into a jail cell for a lifetime," said Texas Department of Patrol Lieutenant Craig Cummings.
