Houston plans to become more bicycle-friendly city

No description found

HOUSTON – The Houston City Council voted to approve the Houston Bike Plan in an effort to make the city a safer more bicycle-friendly area.

“Houstonians need more choices to connect safely to jobs, parks and services other than by car,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner.  “The Houston Bike Plan provides a guide toward creating a safer and more accessible city that can be enjoyed by anyone who wants to ride a bicycle.”

The plan is estimated to finish by 2027, officials said.

Leaders said the bike plan has four main goals: Improved safety, increased ridership, increased access and improved development and maintenance of facilities.

A 25-member advisory committee contributed to the plans and officials said the plan does not commit any city resources or funding.

The specific plan is to add over 600 miles to the already existing 270 mile bikeway networks already exiting throughout the city.
