The injured student was taken to a nearby hospital with injury to their leg.
Lt. Larry Crowson of the Houston Police Department said investigators believe a fight began on the school bus and continued after students exited the bus.
“What we believe happened is there was a fight on a school bus here,” Lt. Crowson said.“The fight continued off the school bus into the intersection where you had one student shoot another student.”
A neighbor tells KPRC 2 News Reporter Corley Peel she heard 3 gunshots as she watched the shooting unfold from her window. The woman, asked to remain anonymous, but said she rushed over while calling 911.
“I was trying to put a tourniquet on his foot since there was a lot of blood,” the witness said.“ One person put a sweater on top, and another man put a belt around his leg so he wouldn’t lose too much blood. Because he was bleeding a lot.”
During the active investigation, Benbrook was placed on lockdown while the afterschool program was in progress. The shooting was also close to Langwood Park. The witness said its upsetting the shooting happened so close to playgrounds and a school.
“We have children too, and there’s always a lot of insecurity here in the park at night. Gunshots aren’t unusual, but today this was much more serious,” the witness said.
HISD police are investigating and have identified the juvenile suspect. Houston police say the student was found at a nearby home and taken into custody.
The investigation is ongoing.
KPRC 2 will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
