HOUSTON – A police officer has been hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting in South Houston early Friday morning.
According to the Houston Police Department, officers were called around 1 a.m. to the 1400 block of Amarillo Street to assist South Houston Police Department.
Officials say the incident began when three South Houston officers attempted to stop a vehicle, leading to a chase that moved through both Houston and South Houston.
The chase ended when the suspect pulled into a driveway.
As officers approached the vehicle, one officer walked near the passenger side and saw that the suspect had a shotgun. When the officer alerted the other officers to the weapon, the suspect shot the officer in the head. The two other officers then returned fire, killing the suspect.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing a rapid burst of gunfire before seeing a large police presence.
The injured officer was taken to a hospital.
The South Houston Police Department is leading the investigation.
