Houston officer shoots suspect accused of pointing gun at man and child

Police say the man pointed the gun at officers multiple times during a foot chase

HOUSTON – Police shot a suspect who allegedly pointed a gun at officers multiple times following a foot chase in west Houston after a man reported the suspect had pointed the gun at him and his child.

The officer-involved shooting happened in the 2400 block of Briarview Drive.

Police say the original call came from the 14300 block of Westheimer Road after a man reported the suspect had pointed a gun at him and his child. The man ran into a nearby restaurant to get away from the suspect.

Two officers responded to the scene and saw the suspect. Commanding him to drop the weapon, police say the suspect refused and started running. Officers chased after him.

The foot chase went into a nearby neighborhood where the suspect reportedly pointed the gun at officers multiple times.

“If you look at the time, around 6:45 p.m., this is a community back here that we have a lot of citizens that are walking at night getting exercise, so you can imagine what the officers had to do,” said Assistant Chief James Skelton.

Skelton said officers ushered nearby citizens away from the scene as they continued to order the man to drop his weapon.

The man refused all commands, at which point, Skelton says an officer with five years on the force fired his weapon at the suspect, hitting him.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he is expected to survive.

The shooting remains under investigation by HPD and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
