Man accused of fatally shooting 12-year-old appears in court

HOUSTON – A man accused of fatally shooting a 12-year-old and injuring his older two brothers appeared before a judge Wednesday morning.  Kahlid Yusuf Worrell, 24, is accused of killing Deunte Cooks.

The shooting happened at a home on Bammelwood near Bammel Village on New Year's Day.

Sheriff's detectives said Worrell, who went by the nickname "Chirp" had some type of disagreement with Deunte's brother, 23-year-old Dashawn Norwood.  Worrell allegedly barged into the family's home and opened fire.

Norwood was shot multiple times. He was able to jump out of a side window in the house and tried to run to a neighbor's house for help, but collapsed in the street.

Deunte was watching television when he was shot.  He died at the scene.

Another brother, Rogerious Grant, 18,  was also shot, but the bullet grazed him.

One of the victims managed to text "Chirp shot me," in his cellphone, according to documents read in court.

Worrell went on the run after the shooting, but was later captured.  He was charged with murder and his  bond was denied.
