Marijuana grow field discovered in Fort Bend County

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – Fort Bend County sheriff's deputies are searching a wooded area for suspects who fled in the middle of a pot bust in Sugar Land on Tuesday afternoon.

Two fields of marijuana covering about 5 acres were discovered behind an old prison in Sugar Land, off Highway 6 near the Sugar Land Regional Airport.

Deputies encountered two men who they believe were the growers Tuesday morning. Sheriff Troy Nehls told Local 2 one of the men pointed a pellet gun at the officers before both ran off into the woods.

The bust is the result of a two-month long investigation by the Fort Bend County drug task force.

Investigators say the marijuana plants have a street value of about $1,000 per plant.

"This isn't corn," Nehls said. "This is a cash cow for some should they have been successful, they would have been very wealthy at the end of this. We ruined somebody's day today."
