HOUSTON – The Harris County Commissioners Court held a special meeting Tuesday morning to fill the position of Precinct 4 constable.
The commissioners voted unanimously in favor of Mark Herman. He was sworn in using his grandmother's Bible by Judge Ed Emmett. Herman's term will last until Dec. 31, 2016.
"I'm very happy, very pleased. I'm ready to go to work. It's been a seven-day transition period and I'm ready to pick up the reins and pick up where Sheriff (Ronald) Hickman left off," Herman said.
Herman has been with Precinct 4 for nearly 30 years, most recently serving as assistant chief deputy.
"We want to continue to fight crime and work with our communities and do what we do best, and make Precinct 4 and that whole area the safest place in Harris County," said Herman.
He said his plan is to promote from within the department. Herman said Capt. Donald Steward will be promoted to take over as assistant chief deputy.
Hickman, the former constable, was appointed interim Harris County sheriff last week after Adrian Garcia resigned and entered Houston's mayoral election.
