Many fans didn't make Astros victory parade after METRO system overwhelmed

HOUSTON – Some fans trying to make it downtown for the Houston Astros World Series championship parade Friday never made it.

The city's METRO system was overwhelmed by the number of people who parked at NRG Stadium in the hopes of using trains and buses to get downtown.

Hundreds of people were seen waiting in line at a METRORail station about an hour before the victory parade started.

The line at the NRG Park station stretched from the platform around a media and into the parking lot.

Other people said they were stranded at METRO Park and Ride lots outside of downtown, trying to get to the parade.

Frustrated fans took to social media to vent.

METRO, citing heavy traffic in the area, issued the following statement about the issue:

“METRO successfully transported thousands of people today to the parade. Staff modified routes, added additional trains to METRORail lines and utilized every possible vehicle to help patrons reach their destinations. We faced the same challenges as private vehicles due to street closures and high volumes of pedestrian and vehicle traffic downtown. METRO recognized the importance of supporting today’s event while operating our normal services which is why all rides were free. Today’s event demonstrates the need for continued investment in high-quality public transit across the Greater Houston Area. We look forward to continued conversations and support for innovative mass transit solutions particularly as our region continues to grow.”

NRG issued refunds for their $12 parking fees.
