HOUSTON – More than a dozen apartments were damaged in a fire in southwest Houston on Monday.
The fire happened at an apartment complex on Gustine Lane and South Gessner Road.
One man is being called a hero for helping save lives.
Daris Johnson alerted tenants, telling them to get out because the fire was spreading fast.
"I knocked on everyone's door, banging on the windows," Johnson said. "The best I can. I did everything I can to get in there and get everybody out."
Neighbors said the fire started in a first-floor, corner apartment. The fire spread to several other units, but many others suffered water and smoke damage.
Electricity has been turned off in the building, so the Red Cross is stepping in to help.
"We will make sure they have food, clothing and shelter," Eric Oubre, with the Red Cross, said.
Julio Rodriguez is one of the people without a place to say. He lives in the building and knows his apartment has damage, but isn't sure of the severity.
"All I know, their apartments the ceiling (fell) off and mine is underwater," Rodriguez said. "Right now (we're) just waiting for answers."
