Man killed in deputy-involved shooting at Walgreens in northwest Harris County

HOUSTON – A man was killed in a deputy-involved shooting at Walgreens in northwest Harris County.

Officials said an off-duty deputy saw a man who he thought was attempting to carjack someone Saturday around 9:25 p.m. in the 3400 block of Cypress Creek Parkway.

When the officer arrived, two men were having a fight outside. The deputy went over to confront one of them and the man started fighting the deputy.

The deputy used his Taser and hit the man, but it wasn't effective. The man grabbed the Taser from the deputy's hand, got on top of the deputy on the ground and hit him.

The deputy got up, pulled a gun and fired three times, hitting the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy suffered numerous cuts, bruises and lacerations. He was taken to the hospital in good condition and is now on administrative leave.

Officials said the incident started when the victim asked another man for a ride. The victim started acting strange and the driver pulled into the parking lot to ask him to get out of the car. The man demanded that the driver get out so he could have the car.
