HOUSTON – Patrols were increased at a Houston-area high school after threats were made Friday.
HISD officials said patrols were increased at Bellaire High School, 5100 Maple St., as a precaution for what was described as a "vague" threat. Any threat is taken seriously, officials said.
Bellaire police said a student told his mother Thursday night that he heard a rumor that someone was going to bring a gun to school. The mother then called police.
On Friday, some parents who heard rumors of a threat of gun violence hurried to the campus to pick up their children.
Arnesia Lewis is a senior at the school. She called her mother so she could go home.
"When I got to school, there were a whole bunch of police cars around and when I went into the cafeteria, everyone was saying there was going to be a shooting. I said, 'I gotta go home. My mom is down the street,'" Lewis said.
The school was not placed on lockdown.
Students said teachers did not allow them to roam the halls, but classes went on as scheduled.
Bellaire High School's principal called parents with the following message.
"The purpose of my call is to let you know that we were made aware of a rumor regarding a possible weapon being brought to campus. Any time we receive this type of information we take it seriously as the safety of our students is paramount."
