The Galveston Police Department Crisis Negotiation Team arrived to convince the 27-year-old woman not to jump. The causeway was closed during the negotiation.

Police said Lt. David Torres grabbed the woman while she was momentarily inattentive and pulled her back to safety. The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment and a mental health evaluation.

The causeway reopened later Monday afternoon.

Torres is a 25-year veteran of GPD and the commander of the crisis negotiation team.

The Galveston Police Marine division, along with the Galveston Beach Patrol and the Coast Guard, assisted in the operation.
