RICHMOND, Texas – A Fort Bend Independent School District student was arrested Tuesday after officials said he had a loaded handgun in his jacket.
Travis High school student DeMonte Zeigler, 17, of Missouri City, is facing charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon and possible controlled substance.
According to a letter sent to parents from Travis High School, an administrator noticed Zeigler was in possession of a possible controlled substance and contacted the school resource officer to investigate. Police said resource officers found a loaded .380 caliber handgun in his jacket.
Zeigler was arrested at the high school. He will face disciplinary action by the school, the letter read.
The letter went on to state:
"Please be assured that we take any incident involving student safety very seriously, and as a precaution, extra officers were on campus during dismissal this [Tuesday] afternoon."
