Mother identifies teen killed in accidental shooting in northeast Houston

HOUSTON – A teenager was shot in the head and killed Thursday in the driveway of his home in northeast Houston.

Police were called around 9:30 p.m. to a home in the 13800 block of Northlake Drive on reports of the shooting.

Investigators said the 17-year-old boy, whom his mother identified as Joseph Reyes, was in front of the house with several other teens when he was accidentally shot once.

" I heard screaming, and they said, 'Mom!' I started CPR. He just didn't make it," Reyes' mother, Allison Flores, said.

He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died.

Police said a gun and a box of ammunition were found at the scene. Flores said her son did not own a gun and never played with them.

Police said several witness provided statements to investigators.

Flores said Reyes, the father of a 1-year-old daughter, graduated last week from North Shore Senior High School. He planned to work in the refineries, she said.

Galena Park Independent School District released the following statement:

"The Galena Park ISD family is heartbroken over the loss of our 2017 North Shore Senior High graduate, Joseph Reyes. This pleasant young man has been a part of our district since kindergarten, and we are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Joseph’s family, and we ask our school
community to support and pray for them during this incredibly difficult time."

The shooting remains under investigation.
