Texas parents say teacher duct taped their children's mouths shut

NBC News – A Texas elementary school teacher has been fired after allegedly covering the mouths of her students with duct tape.

Parents were notified of the incident at Zundy Elemenatry in Wichita Falls on Friday.

After parents filed police reports, juvenile detectives and Child Protective Services are investigating to determine if any criminal charges may be warranted.

While authorities handle the investigation, one mother says her child is having problems dealing with the aftermath.

"Well, not very well," said mother Tamilyn Love. "We decided to put her into counseling. Saturday night she woke up and told me that she had a bad dream — that she was choking and couldn't breathe because she had duck tape over her mouth."

Parents identified the teacher as Dawn Renfro, who has worked for the district for 11 years. Prior to being a teacher at Zundy, Renfro had taught at Sam Houston and Fain Elementary.

"School personnel has been working to ease the minds of parents. Letters are also going home today to 700 students in Spanish and English explaining the situation," Thomas said.

Love said she is relieved to hear the teacher is no longer employed.

"I am feeling frustrated and saddened. I am saddened that this happened to my child," Love said.

However, Love said she contacted an attorney and plans to file a lawsuit because of the impact on her daughter.
