Toyota Center, NRG Center to be opened as additional shelters for flooding evacuees

HOUSTON – Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has announced that the doors to Toyota Center will be open to evacuees due to help alleviate some of the crowding at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Harris County Judge Ed Emmet said NRG Center would be opened to evacuees at 10 p.m. Tuesday. The center is planning on being able to accommodate 10,000 evacuees. Pets are allowed and there will be a play area for children, according to authorities.

Emmett recommended people to go to NRG Center instead of the GRB. The county is asking for volunteers and donations. There were about 100 volunteers, but they were requesting more.

Basic medical care is available at NRG Center.

Rescues by various groups will be brought to the center.

Turner said there were about 10,000 people at the GRB at 6: 30 p.m. on Tuesday.

About 50 Texas National Guard personnel to help with security at the GRB.

Call 800-924-5985 to reach the county donation line.
