Driver hits woman pushing baby before slamming into home near Katy

KATY, Texas – A mother was hospitalized after she was hit by a car while pushing her baby Friday in a neighborhood northeast of Katy. The driver then slammed the car into the side of a house, police said.

The crash was reported about 9:20 a.m. at a home on Wildcroft Drive.

Police said the woman was hit and thrown onto the driveway, and the car continued on into the house.

"The mother was catapulted on top of the vehicle when they struck the house; the baby was pushed to the side," Capt. James Whitaker said.

The mother was taken to Cy-Fair Hospital. She is listed in serious but stable condition.

The baby was not injured.

Police said the homeowner was not home at the time of the crash.

"I got a call that a car had run into my home. I wasn't home but I was on my way home," homeowner James Taylor said.

His family would have been home, but they were on vacation this week.

"I've been missing them, but I'm glad they weren't home," Taylor said. "I just finished remodeling after Harvey."

What caused the driver to leave the road is under investigation.

"We're trying to determine...the speed [of the car]... and if he was using his brakes," Whitaker said.

Investigators were on the scene for hours.

"Investigators are checking to see if the driver had a medical condition episode or other factors," Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff's Office said.
