Wendy's, Culvers, Five Guys and In-N-Out Burger were just some of the contenders, but in the end, the reigning champion turned out to be Texas native Whataburger.
Entrepreneur Harmon Dobson opened Whataburger #1 on Aug. 8, 1950 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Dobson's dream to serve a burger so big that it took hands to hold quickly grew. The orange and white stripes became a familiar sighting across Texas.
Whataburger had 17 restaurants across Texas, Florida and Tennessee by 1960. Tragically, in 1967, Dobson died. His wife, Grace, took over the company, which began to thrive and grow. About wo decades later, Whataburger opened its 300th restaurant.
In 2001, the 77th Texas Legislature designated Whataburger as a "Texas Treasure." In 2005, Grace Dobson died. Her son, Tom, took the role as CEO.
There are now over 750 Whataburgers across the country.
