HOUSTON – The Beacon, a nonprofit organization based in downtown Houston, is dedicated to providing essential services and support to individuals experiencing homelessness. With a mission to offer a pathway to self-sufficiency, The Beacon serves as a crucial resource for those in need, offering a range of programs and services designed to address both immediate and long-term needs.
The Beacon provides a variety of services, including access to meals, showers, laundry facilities, and case management. These services are designed to meet the basic needs of individuals while also offering support and guidance to help them transition out of homelessness.
One of the key components of The Beacon’s work is its day center, which serves as a safe and welcoming space for individuals to access services. The day center is a hub of activity, providing not only basic necessities but also a sense of community and belonging. Here, individuals can connect with case managers who offer personalized support and assistance in navigating the complex systems of housing, employment, and healthcare.
Brigid’s Hope is a program The Beacon also offers to support women ages 35 and over who have previously been incarcerated and experienced homelessness. Through Brigid’s Hope, these women have a place to stay, pursue educational opportunities and counseling services. The goal is to teach them life skills and offer a hand up to help keep them out of jail and to offer an avenue for personal growth so they may be productive and self-sufficient.
Volunteers play a vital role in The Beacon’s operations. From serving meals to assisting with administrative tasks and doing laundry, volunteers are an integral part of The Beacon’s efforts to make a positive impact in the community. Individuals and groups are encouraged to sign up for a volunteer shift here. Parking is available at no cost for volunteers.
The Beacon graciously welcomes donations. Monetary donations are put to good use and in-kind donations of new and gently used items are also accepted.
If you would like to donate items to the Beacon’s day center, you can easily purchase items like razor blades, toothpaste, socks, towels and more through their day center Amazon wish list.
Move-in kit items that will go to families in The Beacon’s diversion program, which provides transitional housing for a family with at least one child to help them on their path out of homelessness, can be purchased on their move-in kit Amazon wish list.
