Houston’s 99 Cents Only stores shutting down, here are other low-cost options

More than 20 local 99 Cents Only stores are closing for good in the Houston area, a punch in the pocketbook for a lot of us.

The one good bit of news is they’re liquidating everything so sales should be pretty good for the last of their items, and those sales started today.

“This was an extremely difficult decision and is not the outcome we expected or hoped to achieve,” Mike Simoncic said. He’s the interim CEO.

“Unfortunately, the last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment, including the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting consumer demand, rising levels of shrink, persistent inflationary pressures and other macroeconomic headwinds, all of which have greatly hindered the Company’s ability to operate. We deeply appreciate the dedicated employees, customers, partners, and communities who have collectively supported 99 Cents Only Stores for decades.”

Here’s where we want to focus -- what are the other low-cost options out there for groceries? And how far are they from the current 99 Cents Only stores that are closing?

We’re mapping it out and also listing below the alternative stores near the 99 Cents Only stores that are closing.

Two low-cost options from KPRC 2 Investigates reporter Amy Davis include:
