HOUSTON – Whether you just want to cover your grays or keep your nails looking polished, salons can be expensive. But it doesn't matter if you go to Supercuts, Visible Changes or a hoity-toity high-end salon, all of the stylists started out at the same place.
Before you dismiss the idea of saving big bucks at a beauty school, consider the advantages.
The prices at The Salon at Remington in Webster will blow you away. Haircuts are $10. Color starts at $25. They use professional-grade Matrix products.
"They know how to apply it properly," client Jane Boyd told consumer expert Amy Davis. "I just love my hair color!"

Boyd is a regular at Remington. Since she's saving about 80 percent of what she would pay elsewhere, she can come back more often.
Unlike regular salons, instructors, who are also licensed cosmetologists, are watching closely.
"As an instructor, I want to be right there so there are no problems to run into," said Yalanda White, the director the cosmetology school at Remington's Webster campus.
Behind the salon are classrooms where students start their course work. They don't get their hands on real clients until month 3 of the 12 month program, and they are trained in much more than just hair. They are training for full on-pampering.
"We do make-up. We have make-up artists here," said White. "We have nails, facials, massages."
The Salon at Remington even offers princess parties on the weekend. For $10 a girl, little divas can have a spa birthday party.
Channel 2 found a dozen training schools just like Remington offering beauty on a budget in their own salons.
The Aveda Institute in The Woodlands offers facials starting at $25.
At The Paul Mitchell Salon in Katy, a simple cut and style starts at $15.
CHI partners with Houston Training Schools that have four campuses across Houston. They offer daily specials in their clinics, like $3 haircuts on manic Mondays, $3 manicures on Tuesdays and $8 facials and eyebrow waxes on Wednesdays.
