HOUSTON – On November 5, 2024, voters will decide who will serve as the U.S. Representative for Texas’s 18th Congressional District, following the death of Sheila Jackson Lee, who held the position from 1995 until her passing in July 2024 at the age of 74 due to pancreatic cancer.
Congresswoman Jackson Lee was renowned for her leadership in federal efforts to protect women from domestic violence and for her role in making Juneteenth a national holiday.
There are two races to fill her seat -- a special election for the unexpired term and the regular congressional election that covers the next two-year term.
Her daughter, Erica Lee Carter, has announced her candidacy in the special election to complete her mother’s term. On the Republican ticket, there are two candidates: Maria Dunn and Kevin O. Dural.
For the regular election, in August, the District 18 Executive Committee nominated former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to appear on the ballot. Turner emphasized his commitment to continuing Jackson Lee’s legacy of service and advocacy, while also providing stability during the transition. He faces Republican opponent Lana Centonze.
Voters will choose between candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties.
Polls will be open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
