ROBERTSON COUNTY, Texas – Student volunteers lit up the night sky over College Station Friday night with the traditional bonfire.

The official bonfire was banned after 12 students lost their lives when the stack of logs used in the fire collapsed in November of 1999.

Friday night's fire was put on by the volunteers. The bonfire has been held without campus approval for a decade. According to tradition, the bonfire symbolizes A&M's burning desire to beat the University of Texas.

Since A&M no longer plays UT, the fire was lit on the night before the game against the University of Missouri.
