Popular alternative rock band Fall Out Boy released a modern take on Billy Joel’s popular song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” this week, and it mentions a historic Texas event that gives many of us chills.
The song talks about historic, newsworthy events up to 1989 (its release year) such as the Watergate and Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. Fall Out Boy’s version, released on Wednesday, picks up where the original song left off.

“I thought about this song a lot when I was younger,’ said lead singer Patrick Stump on Instagram. “All these important people and events- some that disappeared into the sands of time -- others that changed the world forever. So much has happened in the span of the last 34 years -- we felt like a little system update might be fun. Hope you like our take on it…”
The song covers events from 1989 to today and includes the history-changing events of former President Donald Trump being impeached twice, the Oklahoma City bombing of 1995, and Brexit.
And remember the 2021 deadly Texas freeze which led to a near-catastrophic grid failure? Yeah, the band made sure to include that.
Many fans on social media gave mixed reviews of the song, with most saying the song “should be repeated every few generations.”
