Thereâs always a lot of experimenting on the Houston food scene, but when you know your recipes are just right, then tradition tastes pretty good.
In this episode of âEat Like a Local with Chris Shepherdâ, Shepherd heads to two of his favorite restaurants that serve up authentic Mexican dishes and sits down with the families behind them.
From the meats to the sauces to the fresh and perfectly made tortillas, youâll want to put Dichos Taqueria and El Hildalguense on your list of places to dine.
âEat Like a Local with Chris Shepherdâ is your guide to the best food in Houston. Watch new episodes Saturdays at 10 a.m. on KPRC 2.

Dichos Taqueria
614 S Wayside Dr. | Houston
Dichos Taqueria focuses on cuisine from Guadalajara and Jalisco.
The torta ahogada at Dichos is one of the best sandwiches in Houston, according to Shepherd.
âI feel like this is a hidden gem in this city,â said Shepherd about the family-owned business.
El Hidalguense
6917 Long Point Rd. | Houston
El Hidalguense specializes in cuisine from one of Mexicoâs smaller states, Hidalgo. The owner and his family started in the restaurant business in 1994 in Houston, focused on chicken. One day a customer, who learned they were from Hidalgo, asked if they made lamb barbacoa and consommĂŠ. Thatâs now one of the main things on the menu at El Hidalguense.
âFresh homemade tortillas, big strips of lamb barbacoa, a dried chile sauce, a little onion, cilantro, squeeze of lime, perfection,â said Shepherd. âItâs so good, Itâs one of my favorites.â
