A fusion of flavors awaits as Chris Shepherd takes us on a Mediterranean food truck tour

Shepherd samples shawarmas, gyros, rice bowls, and some uniquely Houston tacos on ‘Eat Like a Local’

Food trucks are everywhere in Houston, but how do you know which ones are worth rolling up to for lunch or dinner? Easy, hit up ones that are Chris Shepherd approved!

In this episode of “Eat Like a Local with Chris Shepherd”, Shepherd’s focused on Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food trucks. He headed back to one he recently tried with his wife and immediately decided had to be on the show. The Al Shami food truck includes a grill made and shipped from Turkey.

He also tried the Gourmandize food truck for the first time after it was recommended by his pal Abbas Dhanani. Dhanani owns Burger Bodega and was featured in the very first episode of “Eat Like a Local”.

Al Shami

7919 Westheimer | Houston

“I want people to love my food. I want people to love coming out to my truck. The husband, the wife, the grandmother, the uncles, the aunties, everybody,“ Amer Haj Mahmoud, Al Shami CEO, told Shepherd.

Mahmoud’s truck is relatively new to the Houston food truck scene and it’s already making a statement.

Shepherd described the technique Al Shami uses for their shawarmas as genius. They open a pocket pita and then wrap it in a very thin sheet of bread that they cook to create a crispy exterior.

Gourmandize Mediterranean Grill

2829 Chimney Rock | Houston

Abraham Manai, who is from the North African country of Tunisia, started the Gourmandize food truck after losing his job in oil and gas during the COVID pandemic. While he started alone, he’s been able to grow and hire staff to help him keep the truck running daily from 11 a.m. to 4 a.m.

Manai has successfully incorporated not only flavors from Tunisia but also tastes from around the world into the Gourmandize food. Shepherd recommends trying the shish lamb taco for a true fusion of flavors that celebrates Houston’s diverse food scene.
