Fort Bend faces traffic nightmare as interstate construction comes to a standstill

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – If you’re in or from Houston, you know this city is always building something or starting a project. In Fort Bend County, however, there has been a holiday nightmare with the interstate on FM 1093.

Three years ago, work began to dismantle Interstate 1463.

“The project was intended to extend from Westpark at 1093 all the way through Firethorn to I-10,” resident Brian Hosford explained.

Although it was initially expected to be completed sooner, the ongoing construction has led to significant stress for many Fort Bend County residents, resulting in dangerously congested traffic at the intersection.

“You rarely see crew members working, and it’s created a hectic situation,” stated Fort Bend residents. In the shopping area, it is reported that many cars constantly cut through business parking lots, making them chaotic due to drivers avoiding multiple traffic lights.

There have also been reports that the construction location is causing numerous accidents, making the interstate drive more dangerous.

When KPRC 2 reporter Joy Addison asked Mary Dau, a nearby business owner, her thoughts on the construction area.

“The light right across the street, when they closed off that light, they didn’t put enough cones or something. So, a car actually drove off the ledge before they filled it,” Dau said.

Joy also spoke with Brian Hosford, who lives near the construction.

“I think most people are just asking, why do we not see consistent crews working? That’s probably the biggest problem,” Hosford said.

The project, which began in February 2022, was proposed by TXDOT to take three years to complete. However, TXDOT expects completion by 2027.
