This popular Filipino treat will put a smile on your face

You can make Halo-Halo at home, no cooking required!

HOUSTON – Derrick and Courtney got a special lesson in Filipino cooking ahead of the annual Houston Filipino Street Festival happening this weekend in Sugar Land.

Cheryl Piccio, spokesperson for the festival shared the easy steps to make Halo-Halo, a popular shaved ice dessert you will find at the festival.

“The great thing about this recipe is you can actually combine the ingredients in any order you want! Ingredients can be found in your neighborhood grocery store, but you will have the most selection if you go to an Asian supermarket,” said Piccio, a Texas correspondent of TFC - The Filipino Channel and well-known Filipino Community Leader.

The Houston Filipino Street Festival is happening on October 22 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. Gates open at noon. Tickets are $17 online and $20 at the door.

Special guests include singer Martin Nievera, often referred to in the Philippines as the “Concert King” and Miss USA, R’Bonney Gabriel.

• Shaved Ice

• Rainbow jellies

• Nata de coco

• Young coconut meat strings

• Red beans

• Lots of ube

• Jackfruit

• Flan

• Evaporated milk

• Ube drizzle (Syrup)

• Pinipig (pandan rice flakes)

• Vanilla ice cream

Instructions:

In a bowl or cup, you will combine the ingredients, usually starting with the beans at the bottom. Then layer the ingredients as you wish.

Then a scoop of shaved ice, with a scoop of Ube ice cream and a piece of flan on top. Finish with the drizzle of ube syrup.
