FORT BEND COUNTY – Today on Houston Life, Derrick Shore and guest co-host Cathy Hernandez faced off!
They were quizzed on civics questions asked in the 2023 National Civics Bee by Kevin Riles, the Immediate Past Chairman, from the Fort Bend County Chamber of Commerce!
In case you’re unfamiliar, our schools, towns and communities are all built around civics! Civics is defined as the studies of rights and duties of citizenship. The goal of the annual National Civics Bee is to educate students and help them understand the importance of civics in everyday life.
The Fort Bend Chamber is thrilled to be hosting this years 2023 National Civics Bee! Organized in partnership with The Civic Trust of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the competition will inspire middle schoolers to become informed about American Democracy. It will also allow them to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, while building greater trust in others and institutions.
Middle school students from across the district are invited to take part in the first-round civics essay competition! Community leaders (including government officials, business leaders and educators) will review each of the 500-word essay submissions. The top 20 students will be selected to move on to the final round of competition: a live quiz event to test their civics knowledge. The finalists and top winners will receive various prizes, including $500 cash for the first-place student! The top 3 winners will then have a chance to compete at the State level.
Local Prizes include:
First Place: $500 cash prize
Second Place: $250 cash prize
Third Place: $125 cash prize
