HOUSTON – Japan Junction meets at Levy Park this weekend for Oshogatsu New Year’s celebration!
Patsy Brown, Executive Director of the Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH), and Ikuyo Katayama, JASH’s Program Director, stopped by Houston Life to invite the community to the second annual Japan Junction Oshogatsu New Year’s celebration.
According to the JASH website, it’s a FREE, family-friendly event featuring live performances, traditional Japanese games, omikuji fortune telling, and craft stations.
Attendees can try their hand at kakizome (the first Japanese calligraphy of the year), decorate a hagoita/battledore, make a daruma woodblock print, fold an origami dragon, or even pound mochi (like we did in Studio B.)
Live performances and food concessions will also be featured at Levy Park.
JASH encourages all Houstonians to make Japan a part of New Year festivities to ensure good fortune stays with you throughout the year!
Watch their full interview and Tessa’s attempt at pounding mochi for the new year in the video above.
