HOUSTON – If you’re looking for a perfect spot to pick up a tasty pir for National Pie Day, Brennan’s of Houston has a world-famous pecan pie!
Brennan’s of Houston has been around for over 50 years, offering guests a bit of Texas-creole cuisine and of course, lots of southern hospitality.
Not only are they famous for their turtle soup and bananas foster – their pecan pie is some of the best in town.
A little bit of back round info -- they opened their doors in1967 as a sister restaurant to the world-famous Commander’s Palace in New Orleans.
Before Brennans’ Chef Carl Walker took over as GM, he was sous chef under Emeril Lagasse at Commander’s Palace and grew up making pies with his mom.
Chef Carl credits his mom Gladys for his love for pie making, she has has won numerous blue ribbons from the Howard County Fair in Missouri for her pies.
Here is the recipe that Chef Carl uses:
Pie Crust:
2.5 cups All-Purpose Flour
1 tsp salt
6 Tbsp butter
2/3 cup shortening
½ cup water
Pie Filling:
3 eggs
¾ cup Karo Syrup
¼ cup Steen’s Pure Cane Syrup
1 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp butter
1 tsp vanilla
1.5 cups pecans
