Sully Erna of ‘Godsmack’ chats with Tessa about current ‘Vibez Tour’ and new documentary

Sully Erna has been entertaining audiences since 1995 as the front man of heavy metal rock band, Godsmack. Known for their face-melting, pyrotechnic performances, Godsmack is doing it differently for their 2024 Vibez Tour.

“We haven’t done this kind of a show since 2004 when we were touring with Metallica. As that tour ended, we went out and we did an acoustic tour, just kind of stripped it down and it went over really well and people really enjoyed it,” Sully said.

The band will play L’Auberge Casino Resort in Lake Charles on February 24th, 2024.

“It’s a nice kind of event to even take your family to. Your moms, your dads, like if you’re a kid or a teenager, or in your 20s and 30s and happen to like Godsmack for the big powerful rock shows that we usually do, then this is the other side of that. This is the more intimate, sexy side we can say to the band to the versus the big angry grrr side,” he admitted.

“Have a nice glass of wine and watch a cool musical performance, hear some cool stories, you know and just kind of take the journey with us. That’s what we want to do on this tour is really create a way to take the audience on a journey, a musical journey,” Sully suggested.

Erna’s best-selling memoir, The Paths We Choose, has recently been made into a documentary, I Stand Alone: The Sully Erna story. It’s now available for streaming on Prime and Apple TV.

“Putting this out originally, starting out with the book was just something that I wanted to do for myself. I didn’t even think I was going to get a publishing deal, nor was I looking for one, nor did I even know how to write a book by the way. I was just writing down stories in my own words,” he said.

Sully initially just wanted to document his life stories so he wouldn’t forget them, but his manager insisted the inspiring stories should be shared.

“It really did become a story of perseverance and I just thought it was important to share that with the audiences because so many people out their struggle with mental illness, anxieties and depressions and just have their own challenges life has thrown at them,” Sully said.

He wants people to know that life is tough, but we all can rise above it.

“Some people don’t last they don’t know how to survive, they don’t know how to cope with it, they don’t know how to reach down inside themselves, find their inner strength to rise above it and move forward and that’s what the documentary is about,” he said.

The Boston boy had a great reminder for our audience.

“I wrote that book because I wanted to show people, we’re not born rockstars or actors and actresses and successful, we’ve all had our challenges and mine were extreme at times,” Sully said.
