Fun activities you can do with your kids for National Engineers Week

Mother and daughters from ‘Mommy and Me: The Listers’ share two experiments to try at home

HOUSTON – From the popular YouTube series ‘Mommy and Me: The Listers’, Crystal, Krissy, and Kinsley Lister join Derrick and Tessa with two DIY experiments that are fun and easy to do with your kids.

These experiments involve popsicle sticks, raw eggs, a plastic trash can, and a shower curtain.

National Engineers Week runs from Sunday, Feb. 18 to Saturday, Feb. 24. Celebrate all week and engage your little ones in the world of STEM with these two interactive activities.

Below are the materials and steps for the two projects to follow along with The Listers.


Experiment 1: Egg Drop Challenge

What you need:

  • Recyclable items
  • Bubble wrap
  • Tape
  • Toilet paper tubes
  • Plastic cups
  • Scissors
  • Plastic bags
  • Straws
  • Q-tips
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Styrofoam cups
  • Raw eggs

Design Challenge:

Design and construct a structure that will support a raw egg from a fall at a given height. The egg must not be cracked or broken.


Experiment 2: Trash Cannon

What you need:

  • Plastic trash can
  • Shower curtain
  • Bungee cord
  • Fog machine
  • Fog juice
  • Plastic drinking cups
  • Sharp tool

Design Challenge:

  1. Using the sharp tool, an adult should cut a hole in the bottom of the trash can
  2. Place the shower curtain over the top opening of the trash can
  3. Secure the shower curtain with the bungee cord
  4. Fill the trash can up with the fog from the fog machine
  5. Stack cups in a pyramid-shape
  6. Hit the shower curtain end with the cut circle end facing and aiming at the cups
  7. Try to knock all of the cups down in three hits of the Trash Cannon
