Houston – Public safety K9s are known to help protect and serve their communities, along with their law enforcement partners.
You can see them in action at the 9th annual K9s4COPs Hard Dog/Fast Dog competition at RodeoHouston.
This event showcases the exceptional abilities of these K9 teams, but also celebrates their crucial role in maintaining public safety.
Thirteen K9s and their handlers will compete for hardest hit and fastest speed.
Deputy Ted Dahlin, with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office stopped by Houston Life with K9 Kyra, a 9-year-old explosive/mobile odor detection K9.
K9 Kyra started to work for HCSO at the start of their explosive/mobile odor unit. Deputy Dahlin has been paired with Kyra since 2016. She was donated to him by K9s4COPs.
Deputy Dahlin’s former partner, K9 Brek, tragically lost his life during a pursuit in 2009.
Deputy Dahlin’s commitment to the cause goes beyond the competition.
As a member of the K9s4COPs board, he has played an important role in supporting the organization’s mission.
Since 2011, K9s4COPs donated K9s have confiscated over one billion dollars in contraband off the streets, located missing persons, assisted in arson cases, seized illegal weapons, and swept buildings, vehicles, entertainment venues, and postal packages for explosive devices or narcotics.
