Losing shoes and racing camels! Watch KPRC 2′s Sofia Ojeda and Brittany Taylor race in the 2024 Sam Houston Camel Cup

HOUSTON – A day at the races is a whole lot of fun.

But if you really want to take things up a notch…just add camels!

Along with the regular horse races at Sam Houston Race Park they like to spice things up a bit. Think ostrich racing, even astronaut racing, and something KPRC 2 anchor Sofia Ojeda and senior digital news producer Brittany Taylor were brave enough to try, the camel racing.

Signing up to ride in the 2024 Sam Houston Camel Cup, Ojeda and Taylor had friends and family come to cheer them on and Houston Life’s Melanie Camp was there to make sure we had the entire adventure covered.

Watch all the fun in the video above.

“What people don’t know is it super fun with your friends and also super family friendly,” said Meritt Mahoney who works at Sam Houston Race Park in their marketing and promotions department.

Mahoney said parents should bring the kids. “There are so many things. We have petting zoos on Sundays. We have live music. We have pony rides on Sundays with the kids. Even if you just want to go with your friends, grab a drink, place some bets. It will be awesome for everyone!”

Whether you get a suite with friends or grab a spot in the grandstands, there are so many ways you can spend a day at the races.

This year Sam Houston Race Park celebrates 30 years of racing history, and while Team KPRC 2 may not have taken home the Sam Houston Camel Cup for 2024, after a day of fun together, turns out we all kind of won in the end.

There are a few weeks left in the Thoroughbred Season before the Quarter Horse Season begins on April 19. This Saturday, March 23 enjoy the fun of Texas Champions Day AND the 2nd Annual Astronaut Race. And mark in your calendar the Kentucky Derby Party at Sam Houston Race Park on May 4.
