HOUSTON – The Tony-Award winning musical “Newsies” returns in a brand-new production by Theatre Under The Stars.
Pierre Marais and Cailen Fu stopped by Houston Life to chat about the musical with Tessa Barrera and special guest co-host, Christina Wells.
Wells plays powerhouse Medda Larkin in this production.
“They’ve taken something that everyone knows and given it a fresh spin and they’ve used our skills, our abilities, that’s what I love the most. They’re like, let me show you this and let me make sure to highlight what these people can do” Wells admitted passionately.
Cailen Fu was part of the Broadway production of Mean Girls and is thrilled to be making her TUTS debut in the roll of Katherine Plumber.
“I feel like this company and this theater is a dream come true,” Fu gushed.
Newsies is an extraordinary story, inspired by actual events. When a band of underdogs became unlikely heroes and stood up to the most powerful men in New York, it shook the world.
“The show itself packs a punch at every corner. Our cast, our company, I think we were all brought together for a reason, I think we really bring the show to life and there is just a lot of fun in every aspect,” Fu said.
Pierre Marais was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. He has starred as Aladdin on Broadway among many other accolades. He says he owes much of his success to his parents who taught him how to fight for what’s right.
“It’s a show that everyone can enjoy. It’s real kids, telling a real story and fighting for what they believe is truly right to be treated with fairness in the world and I just think that that can affect anyone at any age,” Marias said.
Disney’s Newsies at the Theatre Under the Stars is playing now through June 2 at Sarofim Hall, Hobby Center. Tickets start at just $40.
