Houston artist Muka takes us inside her studio

HoustonHouston-based artist Muka set out to Los Angeles after graduating college and intended to work in public relations; but her plan swiftly changed.

“It just really wasn’t fulfilling, I wanted to do something more and be creative,” she said.

With the support of her family and friends Muka took a chance on herself.

“I quit my job, I picked up a paintbrush and I started painting and it kind of just blew up from there,” Muka said.

Now, at 32 years young, she can sell her and auction off her art. Ever-evolving, Muka has curated many collections but stays true to her original goal.

“I think the same vein is still there, the whole concept started with me wanting to explore the inner child,” Muka said.

Muka grew up in Texas with a conservative family. She was raised Catholic and could never quite express herself authentically until she started painting.

“With my art I want to say everything I couldn’t when I was a kid,” Muka explained.

Her art is loud, bold, whimsical, yet unapologetic. She spends hours creating in her portion of the Hardy South Studios in downtown Houston. Muka’s ‘Boots in My Roots’ Collection combines being a girl from Texas with some LA flair.

“It’s about my experience living in LA with the sassy, fast, luxurious life out there and then moving back to Houston and getting back in touch with the Southern roots here in Houston,” she explained.
