Houston – Houston Life welcomed back local actress Amelia Rico. This time, she’s chatting with us about her role in the hit AMC series “Dark Winds”
The series now enjoying success on Netflix with both the first and second seasons available to stream. With other accolades like a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has been picked up for a third season on AMC and AMC+.
Dark Winds is a murder-mystery thriller set in the 1970s and follows two Navajo police officers as they investigate a series of crimes in the Southwest, unraveling layers of mystery deeply tied to Native culture. For Rico, who is Indigenous herself, the role of fearless mother, Ada Growing Thunder is not just another job—it’s a chance to bring authentic Native representation to the screen, a responsibility she takes seriously. She has played roles showcasing her Native background in other hit shows like “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Yellowstone”, and its prequel, “1923”.
As Ada, Rico portrays a protective Navajo mother who is less than pleased when the tribal police come to do a welfare check on her young, pregnant daughter. Rico is featured in four of the six episodes of the first season. Rico is also a mother to a six-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter so the motherly instinct is not new to her.
