Celebrate National Dumpling Day with Duck N Bao

A Journey Through Chinese Culinary Traditions

HOUSTON – Happy National Dumpling Day, foodies! Today, we’re celebrating one of the most beloved dishes in Chinese cuisine—dumplings!

Duck N Bao has 3 locations in Houston where you can experience a culinary art show in real-time. Owners Grace Xia (from Beijing) and Leo Xia (from Sichuan) are passionate about handcrafting traditional Chinese dumplings, and they were kind enough to share some skills with Houston Life!

What sets Duck N Bao apart? Their famous xiao long bao, or soup dumplings. These delicate dumplings are filled with a rich, savory broth and tender meat or veggie filling. Grace and Leo demonstrated how to make them during our segment, showing how much technique goes into every fold and twist of the dough.

  • The Process: First, the dough is prepped and rolled out. Then comes the filling—a savory mix of soup and meat or vegetables.
  • Wrapping: The trick is to carefully wrap the dumpling so that the soup is sealed inside but the dough is thin enough to allow the flavors to come through.
  • The Perfect Bite: Eating xiao long bao is an art in itself! Place the dumpling on your spoon, poke a small hole with your chopsticks, and sip the broth out before devouring the rest. Don’t forget to dip it in a sauce for an extra burst of flavor!
