Check out how some Houstonians are keeping their power on through outages

HOUSTON – It may come as no surprise, after the summer we have just experienced, but did you know here in Houston, we are nearly three times more likely to experience a power outage than the average American? According to Whisker Labs.

Many spent days in the dark following the Derecho and Hurricane Beryl and are not keen to experience it again. Brandon Seidel lives in The Heights and works for Sunrun, a company that says it has a solution to keep the lights on at your home by combining solar with a battery.

Seidel experienced first-hand how the powerful combination can keep the lights on. When the Derecho whipped through Seidel’s neighborhood, thanks to Sunrun, his family’s lights stayed on while everyone else was in the dark. The Seidel’s garage became the neighborhood phone charging zone. “We actually kept the garage door open, and neighbors come in and charge their devices and connect to wifi.”

Sunrun installs solar and a battery to protect against outages by making your home “blackout proof.” Because the solar panels recharge the battery daily, it does not matter how long the outage lasts. Seidel said one Sunrun customer in Porter went nine days without grid power after Beryl hit and during that entire time, everything in their home worked as if there were no outages at all.

“The battery kicks in immediately. Most people don’t even notice that the grid is down until they step outside and see that their neighbors don’t have power. The battery can keep the air conditioning running, the food cold in the refrigerator and all your devices powered even during a prolonged blackout. Another great benefit is that Sunrun customers don’t have to worry about finding gas for a noisy generator,” said Seidel.

Sunrun also helps protect you against rising utility bills because the battery allows you to use your own clean energy when power from the grid is expensive. Using your own stored solar power maximizes potential savings. “Sunrun customers are loving the combination of solar plus a battery because it’s clean and seamless,” said Seidel.
